Which used BMW 3 Series estate should I buy?
Chances are you’re after a diesel-engined car, as that’s how most people bought them new. If so, our favourite engine is the 320d, which has slightly more oomph than the 316d and 318d versions, and yet retains class-leading economy, with up to a claimed 68.9mpg available in the post-2105 facelift Efficient Dynamics models.
The higher powered diesel models all offer an excellent blend of performance, refinement and economy too, while the petrol engines are smoother and even more refined, but ultimately much heavier on fuel.
As for trim levels, all 3 Series are well equipped, with the excellent iDrive infotainment system and alloy wheels, climate control and a multi-function leather steering wheel coming as standard even on the cheaper ES versions. SE trim adds dual-zone climate control and rear parking sensors. Pre-facelift cars were also available in Modern, Sport and Luxury trims, whereas M Sport models have 18in wheels, lowered and stiffened suspension, sports seats and sporty styling tweaks. This suspension actually changes the car’s ride for the worse, making it far too firm, so we would recommend avoiding it if possible.
