The BMW 3 Series leads the charge in the premium executive class. Its primary appeal is in the way it drives, but its engines, standard equipment list and infotainment system are first rate as well. The firm ride on M Sport models is just about the only thing we can grumble about in this near-flawless executive car.

The wildly popular M Sport trim just also happens to be our favourite. Not only does it come with sportier exterior styling that includes 18in wheels, more aggressive bumpers, an M Sport leather steering wheel and black headlining, but it can also be had with the optional 'M Sport Pro' pack. This pack, while relatively expensive, introduces adaptive suspension (amongst a plethora of other goodies) and allows you to stiffen or soften the ride at the touch of the button. It gives the 3 Series a much plusher ride than any of the passive suspension set-ups and is well worth the money.

If you desire a diesel with the ability to worry hot hatches, there’s the 330d. Its 281bhp six-cylinder engine offers rapid acceleration, with 0-62mph dealt with in just 5.3sec (or 5.0sec if you opt for xDrive).
