Review

The BMW 5 Series Touring is quiet, smooth, classy, comfortable and well equipped. It’s also very practical, although it can't quite match the enormous boot that you get with a Mercedes E-Class Estate.

Trim: M Sport

Hugely popular thanks to its sportier looks – inside and out – and bigger alloy wheels. However, you also get stiffer suspension that does nothing for ride comfort. SE trim is better value and is where our money would go.

Engine: 530d xDrive

Begins the move from four cylinders to six, and steps up refinement in doing so. It makes the 5 Series quick, too, but unless this is a priority, we’d stick with the 520d – it’s cheaper to buy and run, and isn’t exactly slow, either. Four-wheel drive (xDrive) adds all-weather traction.
