The model
Read full reviewIn the right specification, the BMW 5 Series Touring is quiet, smooth, classy, comfortable and well equipped. It’s also very practical, although it can't quite match the enormous boot that you get with a Mercedes E-Class Estate.
get the best priceThe trim
See full equipmentM Sport trim is extremely popular, thanks largely to its more aggressive body styling and bigger alloys. You don't get a lot of extra substance for the added cost, apart from sports front seats, bigger brakes, privacy glass and a much stiffer ride courtesy of the M Suspension.
The engine
See full engine specsIf you want more grunt than you get in the entry-level 520d, then the brawnier six-cylinder 530d Touring has it in spades; it’s effortlessly quick (0-62mph in 5.6sec) and, in everyday driving, just as rapid as the more powerful 540i petrol while still offering excellent fuel economy. It's not as quiet as the E400d but it still sounds good.
