What should I look for in a used BMW 6 Series hatchback?

The 6 Series GT is a big car, so check the exterior for any dings or scrapes and the alloy wheels for kerb grazes. A sizeable chunk of metal missing from the wheel rim might suggest a high-speed kerb impact that could also have affected the suspension system.

You’ll find a great number of electronic toys inside the GT, so it's worth spending some time to familiarise yourself with all the buttons’ functions and check that they all do what they’re supposed to.

What are the most common problems with a used BMW 6 Series hatchback?

The GT is yet to experience recalls of its own, but it's worth looking at issues the car it's based on, the 5 Series, has faced. Some of which include...

The EGR cooler may leak presenting a fire risk

A visual inspection of the EGR cooler will be needed to check for leaks and excessive build-up of deposits. The EGR cooler will be replaced on all affected vehicles (at no cost to owners).

Leaking glycol coolant could create in combination with soot and oil sediments in the EGR module ignitable deposits.

The EGR cooler will need to be internally inspected with an endoscope and replaced if evidence of leaking is found.

Brake switch may be activated permanently

If the driver accidentally pulls up the brake pedal, the brake switch would be activated permanently. This would be due to the ball head connecting the brake pedal and the master brake cylinder failing, because the ball head might not be locked properly into the ball cage. If necessary, the pedal mechanism will be replaced.

Any main BMW dealer will be able to confirm whether a car you're looking at is affected by a recall.

Is a used BMW 6 Series hatchback reliable?

The relatively small numbers in which the 6 Series GT sold means it doesn't appear in our latest reliability survey. However, the 5 Series on which it's based did feature – it placed first (in petrol form) and (fifth in diesel form) out of seven cars in the luxury car category. BMW as a brand ranked 13th out of 30 manufacturers featured.
