In 840d form, the 8 Series is in a class of its own: a diesel luxury coupé that’s relatively cheap to run, offers very strong performance and is capable of covering long distances between fill-ups. But the petrol M850i is harder to justify, being less comfortable than the Mercedes-Benz S560 Coupé and less entertaining than the Porsche 911 and Aston Martin DB11.get the best price
Trim: 8 SERIES
All models have two-zone climate control, leather upholstery, heated and electrically adjustable leather seats, keyless entry and start, ambient interior lighting and BMW's brilliant iDrive infotainment system. You can also add heated armrests, a heated steering wheel and much, much more.
Engine: 840d xDrive
The 840d is objectively the engine to go for. It may not quite match the sparkling performance of the M850i, but it has oodles of low-down shove that makes overtaking a breeze. Don’t expect it to sound like a clattery tractor, either. It’s not capable of the mellifluous note of the petrol V8s, but is still throaty and not coarse under hard acceleration.
