In 840d form, the 8 Series is in a class of its own: a diesel luxury coupé that’s relatively cheap to run, offers very strong performance and is capable of covering long distances between fill-ups. But the petrol M850i is harder to justify, being less comfortable than the Mercedes-Benz S560 Coupé and less entertaining than the Porsche 911 and Aston Martin DB11.

The M850i's 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 feels immensely strong, but is impressively refined when you want it to be, imbuing the 8 Series with a sense of duality that entirely befits a continent-crushing GT. And, with the added traction of xDrive four-wheel drive, you can deploy all 523bhp with virtually no drama.
