The BMW iX is a genuinely impressive piece of engineering. Not only is it beautifully appointed, but it’s also quick and beautifully refined (it really is super-hushed on the move). In range-topping xDrive50 form, the eye-watering price tag is hard to ignore, especially when you consider that it’s not as sharp as a Jaguar I-Pace in the bends, or as practical as the seven-seat Tesla Model S. We can’t wait to sample the ‘entry-level’ xDrive40. Priced roughly in line with key rivals such as the Audi E-tron, I-Pace and Mercedes EQC, it has the potential to be our favourite luxury electric SUV.

The engineSee full engine specs
We have yet to drive this ‘entry-level’ model, but performance looks good on paper, thanks to an output of 322bhp and a 0-62mph time of 6.1 seconds. Its official range of 257 miles is competitive, but not groundbreaking.
