The BMW X1 is good to drive, classy inside and hugely practical. It isn't as quiet or comfortable as the best family SUVs, but it's a fine buy if you fancy something a little more sporty.

This range-topping trim comes with 18in alloy wheels, leather seats, an aggressive bodykit, stiffer suspension and heated front sports seats. It's too pricey to recommend and you have to suffer a bumpy ride, though.

Worth a look if you do lots or miles and are willing to consider a diesel. It pulls harder than the petrols at low revs, so feels quicker than the 0-62mph time of 9.3sec would suggest.
