The X3 offers a superb driving experience with a deeply impressive lineup of engines, as well as a spacious and high-quality interior. That all adds up to make it one of the very best large SUVs to buy, but it’s still worth checking out the Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60 as highly capable alternatives.

This builds on the xLine and brings a sportier exterior to the X3 with a different alloy wheel design and body-coloured trim.

Putting the fully-electric BMW iX3 aside, the xDrive30e plug-in hybrid PHEV is the best choice for company car buyers, with by far the lowest CO2 emissions in the line-up and a generous company car tax break. However, it’s arguably the weakest model in the line-up to drive and there are far better plug-in hybrid options out there, such as the Lexus NX 450h and Volvo XC60 T6 Recharge – both of which have much longer electric ranges.
