The Z4 will appeal to those looking for a comfortable and relatively practical convertible sports car. However, if you're looking for something that's primarily precise, fun and exciting to drive, both the Audi TT Roadster and Porsche Boxster outshine it considerably.

The range-topping M40i gets the same equipment as the M Sport, plus a number of luxuries such as lightweight 19in alloy wheels, a more aggressive bodykit, and electrically adjustable seats with lumbar support and driver memory settings. But the real highlights are its Adaptive M suspension and M Sport differential, both of which help to make the M40i feel more involving to drive than lesser models.

When you plant your right foot on the accelerator pedal, its 335bhp 3.0-litre straight six responds with virtually no turbo lag, rocketing you from 0-62mph in a claimed 4.5 seconds. It also sounds much more invigorating than the four-cylinder engines with a smooth, free-revving nature that suits the M40i’s more focused demeanour. We even like the M40i’s snappy eight-speed gearbox.
