There is a fine line between being different and being an outcast. With funky colour combinations available, the latest Citroen C3 does a good job of turning heads, and is more spacious and practical than previous C3 models. However, soft suspension makes its handling almost comical, while its vague steering does little to boost your confidence. Rivals are much better to drive.

Engine: 1.2 PureTech 82

Around town this 81bhp three-cylinder petrol feels pokey enough, but get it out onto the motorway and you need to rev it hard to make it go. The good thing is it’s always pretty smooth when you do, although the standard five-speed manual gearbox has a very woolly shift action.
