With its funky looks, the Citroen C3 does a great job of turning heads. However, it's poor to drive and not very practical, so any number of rivals are more recommendable on an objective level.

Trim: Flair

This range-topping trim pushes the price up by a reasonable chunk, but for that you do get rear parking sensors, a reversing camera and an in-built dash cam. Other trinkets include automatic lights and wipers, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and privacy glass. It looks different to cheaper versions, too, with the distinctive plastic ‘air bump’ side mouldings on the doors, plus a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gearlever.

Engine: 1.5 BlueHDi 100

This 99bhp 1.5-litre diesel has plenty of shove from low revs, but since this engine is much more expensive than the PureTech 110, it's very hard to recommend unless you do an awful lot of miles.
