The C5 Aircross is a great-value large SUV that majors on comfort and refinement, but also offers flexible and frugal engines, versatile seating, a big boot and a decent amount of kit. Don't buy it if you want a plush interior, agile handling or seven seats, though, because its bigger sibling, the Peugeot 5008, and the Kia Sorento do those things rather better.

Entry-level Sense trim is our pick because it plays to the car’s value-for-money ethos while still offering plenty of toys. It comes with electric windows front and rear, dual-zone climate control, 18in alloy wheels, cruise control, automatic lights and wipers, LED headlights, rear parking sensors, a dual-height boot floor, driver's lumbar adjustment, sliding and reclining rear seats, an acoustic windscreen, six speakers, an 8.0in infotainment screen, Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto, two USB ports, a DAB radio and Bluetooth.

If you intend to tow a heavy caravan or boat around, the 129bhp 1.5-litre BlueHDi 130 diesel is the better bet than the Puretech 130 petrol. That's because it has even more low to mid-rev shove but, with the same power output, it's not any actually quicker away from the traffic lights (0-62mph takes 10.4sec). Officially it will average over 60mpg.
