Alfa Romeo now has one of its strongest-ever model line-ups, after years of living off past glories.

The BMW 3 Series-rivalling Giulia executive saloon is one of the best cars in its class to drive, while the closely related Stelvio and smaller Tonale both competes in the booming SUV class.

It’s all a long way from the days when Alfa Romeo just had a couple of dated hatchbacks (the Mito and Giulietta) and the niche 4C sports car in its range.

ALFA ROMEO

Audi is a brand that sets the standard for interior quality, and this, combined with its vast and ever-growing model line-up, has helped it become one of the ‘big three’ German prestige car makers, along with BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

The A3 hatchback, A4 executive saloon and Q7 SUV are all common - yet upmarket - sights on UK roads.

At least some of Audi's success over the past 30 years can be attributed to the growth in sales of vehicles with four-wheel drive; the company arguably led the way in bringing 4x4 technology into the mainstream, with its Quattro coupé in the early 1980s.

Today, most Audis are available with at least the option of four-wheel drive, while the list of SUVs from the brand includes the Q2, Q3, Q5 and Q7.

AUDI

Munich-based BMW is most famous for its sports saloons, in particular the 3 Series and 5 Series. However, it actually builds almost every type of car imaginable: everything from two-seat convertibles to seven-seat MPVs.

The cheapest model in the BMW range is the 1 Series hatchback, which is a rival to the Audi A3, Mercedes-Benz A-Class and Volkswagen Golf. Meanwhile, at the other extreme is the M8&nbsp;grand tourer, which costs more than £120,000.

BMW was also quick to capitalise on the rise of the SUV and now has ten in its range: the X1, X2, X3, X4, X5, X6, X7 and XM, plus the electric iX3 and iX.

All of this makes it one of the big three German prestige brands, along with Audi and Mercedes-Benz.

Ford builds some of the most popular cars in the UK, including the Fiesta and Focus hatchbacks.

This success is partly down to longevity and the fact that there’s a Ford dealer around every corner. However, it’s also because Fords tend to offer good value and be among the best cars in their respective classes to drive.

The company’s huge range also helps; it offers everything from the small – but surprisingly practical – Ka+ to the large and lavishly equipped Edge SUV.

Meanwhile, other highlights of the range include the S-Max and Galaxy people carriers, the Mondeo executive car and the Ranger pick-up.

FORD

Honda is a company that doesn’t like to follow the crowd. So, while it competes in most of the traditional sectors of the car market, in each case it does something a little bit different.

The Jazz, for example, might look like just another rival to Britain’s best-selling car, the Ford Fiesta, but it’s actually much more practical than its rivals, with a flexible boot and Tardis-like interior.

The bigger Civic is also a practical choice, but it’s mainly distinguished by having eye-catching, love-it-or-hate-it styling, despite competing in a sector of the market that’s usually more conservative than a blue rosette.

And while it may not seem so radical now, Honda’s large SUV, the CR-V, was one of the first to forego any pretence of being an off-roader and instead focus on on-road driving dynamics.

HONDA

Hyundai has transformed itself from a maker of oddball hatchbacks that sold in small numbers in the UK, to a major rival to the likes of Ford, Vauxhall and Volkswagen.

The Korean firm’s Ioniq Hybrid is particularly impressive, having beaten the trend-setting Toyota Prius when we tested the cars back to back.

Meanwhile, at the extremes of the Hyundai range you find the tiny i10 city car – a four-time What Car? award winner – and the stylish yet family-friendly Santa Fe SUV.

As a bonus, all of these cars come with the reassurance of a five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty, whereas most of Hyundai’s rivals offer only three years and 60,000 miles of cover.

HYUNDAI

If you’re in the market for a pick-up truck, chances are you’ll have heard of Isuzu. The Japanese brand makes buses and lorries for markets all over the world, but it’s most famous for the D-Max.

A rival to the Mitsubishi L200, Nissan Navara and Volkswagen Amarok, the D-Max pick-up is aimed at drivers who need rugged go-anywhere ability and lots of space, and for whom a conventional SUV just won’t cut it.

ISUZU

Buyers seeking value for money should have Kia towards the top of their shopping list.

Although once a niche brand in the UK, today Kia outsells many more established brands, helped by its market-leading seven-year warranty and a strong reputation for reliability; in fact, Kia regularly finishes towards the top of our reliability surveys.

There are plenty of models to choose from, too, ranging from the small Picanto city car to the Ceed family hatchback and the Sorento large SUV. The Picanto was the first Kia to win its class at the What Car? Car of the Year awards.

Land Rover is synonymous with SUVs, and especially with the Defender – the rugged runabout that has seen service in war zones across the world, but also as part of the Queen’s personal garage.

If off-road prowess is one of Land Rover’s core values, though, the other is luxury. Indeed, the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover Velar are among the best luxury SUVs you can buy.

The Discovery, meanwhile, is a practical rival for the Audi Q7 and BMW X5, while the stylish Evoque (which is available as a three-door convertible as well as a traditional SUV) goes head to head with Audi’s Q3 and BMW’s X1.

In the coming years, we’ll see a new road-biased ‘Road Rover’ as well as an all-new Defender.

LAND ROVER

In the same way that Infiniti acts as Nissan’s premium arm, Lexus has a similar tie-in with Toyota. And since most of Toyota’s models are offered as hybrids, it’s no surprise to see the same from Lexus, although there are some traditional petrol engines, too.

The brand focuses heavily on SUVs – namely the NX and RX – but also has the CT hatchback, ES executive saloon and LS luxury car among its portfolio. More small and large SUVs are expected in the future.

Like Toyota, Lexus has built a very strong reputation for reliability and regularly finishes very close to the top of our annual Reliability Survey.

LEXUS

Mazda can be summed up in a single word: bold. Not only do its cars generally look like nothing else on the market, but it’s also invested heavily in innovative engine technology.

So, while many car makers have moved to smaller turbocharged engines, Mazda instead offers larger motors that are still efficient. For example, the entry-level petrol option in the Mazda 3 is a 2.0-litre unit –&nbsp;far larger than what you’ll find in most rivals – but it remains very clean.

Highlights of Mazda’s line-up include the MX-5 sports car, which has won our Convertible of the Year Award multiple times, and the CX-5 large SUV, which was named as our inaugural best car for dog owners.

MAZDA

Mercedes’ line-up is vast – ranging from the A-Class family hatchback through to staple saloons such as the C-Class and E-Class, and onwards towards multiple SUVs, luxury saloons and even sports cars. Coupés and convertibles are thrown into the mix as well.

As one of the ‘big three’ German brands, Mercedes most often finds itself competing with Audi and BMW but more recently has found itself fending off Jaguar and Volvo, too.

Mercedes models are known for comfort. One example of this is the E-Class, because while the Audi A6 has a plusher interior and the BMW 5 Series handles better, the E-Class is probably the most comfortable for a long motorway journey.

MERCEDES-BENZ

Talk about taking an idea and running with it. The big-selling Mini hatchback is still at the core of the firm’s range, but its cute styling and relatively compact dimensions have been spun off into an estate (the Clubman) and an SUV (the Countryman), as well as a convertible.

Despite its small size, the Mini is a firmly premium product, and the three-door hatchback counts the Audi A1 and Volkswagen Polo among its key rivals.

The fact that Mini is owned by BMW brings some big advantages –&nbsp;not least the fact that its infotainment system is based on BMW’s industry-leading iDrive.

MINI

While Mitsubishi sells both the Mirage hatchback and the L200 pick-up truck in the UK, the core of its range is in SUVs – handy, since this is one of the largest markets worldwide.

There’s an SUV to suit everyone, too. If you’re a company car driver, the Outlander PHEV mixes low fuel bills with a spacious interior. The ASX, meanwhile, is attractively priced against key rivals such as the Nissan Qashqai and Seat Ateca. Or, if you prefer mud to asphalt, the Shogun offers genuine off-road ability.

More SUVs are on the way, too, including one that’s rumoured to bring back the ‘Evo’ name made famous in rallying.

MITSUBISHI

Nissan turned up early to the SUV party, with its Qashqai paving the way for the countless models we see today. The Qashqai continues to sell in big numbers in the UK, too, and was also our overall Car of the Year in 2014.

Don’t think Nissan is just about SUVs, though. As well as the Qashqai, the smaller Juke and the larger X-Trail, the Japanese brand has the Micra hatchback, GT-R sports car and Navara pick-up truck.

Nissan was also one of the first big car makers to launch a fully electric car, with its latest Leaf being one of the best on the market.

Despite being based in Japan, Nissan has long committed to building cars in the UK, making several of its best-selling models at a huge factory in Sunderland.

NISSAN

Peugeot has its strongest model line-up for some years, with some of its cars now rated by our testers as being among the very best available.

Highlights focus around the firm’s newest SUVs, the 3008 and 5008. The 5008 was named Large SUV of the Year at the 2018 What Car? Awards, thanks to its appealing blend of space, interior quality and low running costs.

That bodes well for future launches, too, because many of the learnings from these cars will be passed on as new versions of existing cars are launched – something that could take many years, because the Peugeot range is so big, ranging from an entry-level supermini with the 108 to an executive saloon with the 508, up into the SUV range and also vans.

Buyers should evaluate some of the lower-rated cars in the range more carefully, though. Some are now quite old, and are subsequently left behind in terms of quality when compared with the opposition, making them below-average buys, in our estimation.

PEUGEOT

Porsche is best known as the quintessential sports car maker, but its line-up is increasingly diverse, interesting and successful, from its SUV family to the Panamera hatchback and shooting brake and, in time, a planned family of electric vehicles.

Whatever your choice, What Car?’s testers rate the cars highly; Porsche has an unusually high percentage of five and four-star cars.

Without exception, its sports cars are class leaders or among the class leaders, standing out for combining driving thrills with surprising luxury and comfort. Likewise, its SUVs are among the sharpest handling, as well as offering high levels of practicality and quality. Meanwhile, the Panamera is a true rival to the very best large executive saloons.

Porsche also sees itself as an electric car pioneer and has already enjoyed sales success with its plug-in hybrid range. Its first all-electric sports car is imminent, signalling the firm’s intent to stay relevant for many years to come.

PORSCHE

Hatchbacks, SUVs, hybrids, electric cars: Renault makes them all, in a variety of shapes and sizes, meaning&nbsp;it has a line-up designed to tempt pretty much everyone.

From the roadside, the standout feature of all its cars is design, with them instantly recognisable as members of the Renault family, without being so similar that they fall&nbsp;into the Russian doll trap. However, in terms of ability they're a mixed bag,&nbsp;ranging&nbsp;from very good to no better than average.

Models that fall into the former camp include the Clio small hatchback and Megane E-Tech electric car, while the smaller Zoe electric car is also impressive in most respects; it's just a pity Renault omits key safety kit.

On the other hand, the Captur, Arkana and Austral SUVs are all outclassed by several rivals.

Renault has some exciting new models planned, including a new Scenic (this time it will be an electric SUV instead of a conventionally powered MPV) and two cars that reimagine classic Renaults: the 4 and 5.

RENAULT

Today, the resurgent Seat brand is selling better cars than at any time in its history.

In large part, that’s because it is one of the brands owned by the VW Group. Underneath, all of the cars it sells are strongly related to similar models sold by Volkswagen itself, or the likes of Skoda and even Audi. If you are buying a Leon, for example, the hardware will be similar to that of the Golf, Octavia and A3.

But while Seat makes the most of this tie-up to offer everything from city, small and family cars, including estates, through to a full range of SUVs, it also adds in its own slice of character, both with its distinctive styling approach and because its engineers generally tune the cars to deliver sportier handling.

While all of its cars are decent, it is the SUVs that stand out. The Arona and Ateca are among the class leaders and have enjoyed triumphs at the What Car? Awards.

SEAT

One of the greatest success stories in the car world of recent decades is Skoda’s rise to become a hugely credible mainstream maker of good-value, good-sense cars.

Central to that success has been its place within the VW Group, alongside the Volkswagen brand itself, plus the likes of Seat and Audi. That has given it access to exactly the same underpinnings for its cars as the other brands, and it has complemented this by adding its own developments, from the way the cars drive and ride through to the features they have and the pricing.

The result is a range that extends from a city car to a large executive saloon, with family and large seven-seat SUVs too. There’s a wide variety of petrol and diesel engines, all of which are competitive for the class.

As a result, Skoda has a range of cars that is almost entirely class-leading or among the class leaders, and it has enjoyed long-time success at the What Car? Awards as a result.

SKODA

Suzuki is well known as a motorcycle manufacturer, but the car brand has been enjoying decent success in recent years, thanks to a line-up of neat, well-equipped and keenly priced models.

Its expertise focuses on smaller cars, although its high-riding SUV range is also hugely credible, especially the Ignis and Vitara, which are both rated highly by What Car?’s testers and which have enjoyed success at the What Car? Awards as a result.

Well priced, decent to drive and full of useful tech, Suzuki’s cars also generally stand out for delivering good fuel economy. The Ignis, Celerio and Baleno have all stood head and shoulders above the competition during our True MPG testing.

SUZUKI

Toyota is a company undergoing a quiet revolution, as it works hard to replace its sensible but somewhat bland reputation with one for being a bit more daring, in areas such as the styling of its cars and its enthusiastic leadership of cutting-edge technology, such as hybrid systems.

That process seems to be working for buyers, with the hugely popular and striking-looking C-HR SUV in particular attracting a great deal of interest. The latest version of the hybrid Prius is also rated highly by What Car?; it’s the first Prius to go on sale that our testers have felt can truly compete all round with existing petrol or diesel rivals.

However, it’s worth noting that this period of transition is also a work in progress, and that many of the firm’s cars are still rated as being no more than average among class rivals by our testers.

TOYOTA

The VW Group famously spends more money on research and development than any rival – and as a result, perhaps it should be no surprise that our testers rate its cars so consistently highly.

The fact that many of those cars use the same underpinnings also helps, because it means that if they get it right once, they have the foundations to keep on getting it right.

However, the Volkswagen brand faces plenty of tough competition, often from within, because the rapidly rising Seat and Skoda brands that are also part of the group have access to the same technology.

VOLKSWAGEN

Volvo is now a true rival to the likes of Audi, BMW, Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz, offering an alternative take on premium executive cars to a rapidly growing fanbase.

After a string of strong launches – notably with the Mk2 XC90 and XC60 SUVs – it struck gold in early 2018 when it launched its smallest SUV, the XC40. When our testers compared the car with its rivals, they concluded that it was the best launch of the previous 12 months, earning it our coveted overall Car of the Year Award.

The good news is that, like many car makers, Volvo now uses the same structure underneath most of its cars – so if they get it right on one model, it usually bodes well for the rest. That’s the case here, with Volvo’s subsequent saloon and estate launches complementing the SUVs and making for a generally extremely appealing line-up.

<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/electric-suvs/n23038">Electric SUVs</a> are designed to offer the best of both worlds: pure electric motoring and the practicality of an <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/suvs/n26176">SUV body style</a>. It’s no surprise, then, that it’s one of the fastest growing car classes. While some electric SUVs performed exceptionally well in our <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/reliability-survey-most-reliable-cars/n26137">Reliability Survey</a>, others suffered a high proportion of problems, bringing the average for the class down to 89.3%, which is nearly two percentage points lower than the average for other electric vehicles. It contains some of the highest-scoring models for reliability, including the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/tesla/model-y/hatchback/review/n23624">Tesla Model Y</a>, which achieved 99.2%, with only 4% of the cars in our survey suffering any faults. However, it also contains one of the lowest-scoring model in the entire survey, the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/vauxhall/mokka/hatchback/review/n22633">Vauxhall Mokka Electric</a>, which had faults on 55% of the cars reported on. Here’s how electric SUVs performed according to our latest data. <h2 dir="ltr"><a href="https://survey.alchemer.eu/s3/90474827/6fe2cc473d53&amp;rdt=1">The 2025 What Car? Reliability rating 99.2%<ul><li dir="ltr"> Most common faults: Non-motor electrics 3%, motor electrics 1% </li> <li dir="ltr"> Average repair cost: £0 </li> <li dir="ltr"> Typical time off road: 75% one day or less </li></ul>The Model Y is based on the same underpinnings as the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/tesla/model-3/saloon/review/n19010">Model 3</a> executive saloon, but it's been turned into a family SUV with a higher driving position and more room inside. It is fast, has a long range between charges and is very practical. However, there are quieter and more comfortable alternatives. Another thing the Model Y has in its favour is its impressive reliability record. Its not only the most dependable electric SUV, it's the top scoring electric car overall in the latest survey. Tesla has really turned around the reliability of its cars over the past few years and the Model Y is testament to this. Only 4% of the examples we heard about went wrong, and all were fixed for free. It is good to drive and practical, but its official range of up to 292 miles is a lot less than the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/q6/estate/review/n26937">Audi Q6 e-tron</a> (381 miles), the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mercedes-benz/eqe/4x4/review/n26300">Mercedes EQE SUV</a> (376 miles) and the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/tesla/model-y/hatchback/review/n23624">Tesla Model Y Long Range</a> (331 miles). Although it scored a few percentage points less than the Model Y, it beats its German rivals for dependability. Only 12% of the iX3s in our survey encountered glitches, and most were electrical issues affecting the air-con, motor and other components. Reliability rating 95.8%<ul><li dir="ltr"> Most common faults: sat-nav/infotainment 15%, non-motor electrics 5% </li> <li dir="ltr"> Average repair cost: £0 </li> <li dir="ltr"> Typical time off road: 60% one day to a week </li></ul>You'd be forgiven for thinking the Volvo XC40 Recharge is no longer on sale new because its name has been changed to <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volvo/ex40/estate/review/n22063">EX40</a> to fit in with the other models in Volvo's electric range, the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volvo/ex30/estate/review/n26262">EX30</a> small SUV and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volvo/ex90/estate/review/n27061">EX90 seven-seater</a>.  The XC40 expertly mixes style, space and comfort. It has a stylish interior, comprehensive safety equipment and a supple ride. It has an official range of 250 miles. A fifth of XC40 Recharge models had a problem, mostly with the sat-nav/infotainment. Although all cars remained driveable, only 20% of the affected vehicles were fixed within a day; 60% took up to a week and the rest took longer. Kia EV6 (2021-present)</h3>

Reliability rating 94.9%<ul><li dir="ltr"> Most common faults: 12-volt battery 6%, motor electrics 6% </li> <li dir="ltr"> Average repair cost: £0 </li> <li dir="ltr"> Typical time off road: 73% more than a week </li></ul>The Kia EV6 is a brilliant electric car with a long range and the ability to charge up very quickly. It's also huge in the back and good to drive. It was so good when it was launched that it was crowned our <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/car-of-the-year-awards-overall-winner/n25379">Car of the Year</a>  in 2022.It's had a facelift recently and gained a new 84kWh battery that has an official range of 361 miles (up from 328 miles previously). There's also a<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/4x4s-for-off-roading/n26188"> four-wheel drive</a> dual-motor (AWD) EV6 that can complete the 0-62mph dash in just 5.3 seconds, which is faster than a Model Y Long Range.The other good news for potential buyers is that it's proving very robust so far. Only 13% of the examples in our survey went wrong, mostly with battery and motor issues. While all problems were sorted out at no cost to owners, many people were without their cars for some time: only 18% of issues were resolved in a day or less and 73% of faults took more than a week to fix. <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/ev6/estate/review/n23462">Kia EV6 review</a><hr /><h3 dir="ltr">5. Kia e-Niro (2019-2022)</h3>

Reliability rating 94.4%<ul><li dir="ltr"> Most common faults: Bodywork 5%, non-moor electrics 4% </li> <li dir="ltr"> Average repair cost: 82% cost £0 </li> <li dir="ltr"> Typical time off road: 56% one day or less, 39% more than a week </li></ul>The Kia e-Niro was one of the first pure <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-electric-cars-2022/n17000">electric cars </a>that was both offered at a reasonable price and came with a terrific range. The 64kWh version achieved 253 miles in our real-world range test, which is a great figure for a family-sized electric car.The e-Niro was replaced by the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/niro/estate/review/n24582">Kia Niro EV</a> in 2022, but it's the best bet if reliability is your priority because it beat the new model by just over four percentage points. Although 19% of e-Niros went wrong, minor bodywork glitches were the most common complaint. Owners told us that 56% of problems were fixed in a day or less, and 39% took more than a week to put right. The 85 can do 0-62mph in 6.7 seconds, meaning it's quicker off the line than entry-level versions of the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/hyundai/ioniq-5/hatchback/review/n22944">Hyundai Ioniq 5</a>, <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/ev6/estate/review/n23462">Kia EV6</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/nissan/ariya/hatchback/review/n24303">Nissan Ariya</a>. Although 29% of the cars we were told about went wrong, most suffered minor electrical glitches that were fixed quickly. Most faulty cars remained driveable, and 39% of their issues were sorted out in a day or less. Audi Q4 e-tron (2021-present)</h3>

Reliability rating 93.0% <ul><li dir="ltr"> Most common faults: Bodywork 8%, non-motor electrics 8%, sat-nav/infotainment system 8% </li> <li dir="ltr"> Average repair cost: £0 </li> <li dir="ltr"> Typical time off road: 43% one day or less, 43% more than a week </li></ul>The Q4 is closely related to the Skoda Enyaq, but it's a far more premium proposition with a classy interior, slick infotainment system and a class-leading virtual cockpit dash display. In spite of this, it's also well priced. No wonder, then, that it's Audi's top selling model. The Q4 e-tron is just as dependable as the Enyaq to live with. According to owners, 23% of their cars had problems, with the bodywork, non-motor electrics and sat-nav/infotainment system causing the most upset. However, Audi paid for all faults to be fixed and its technicians got 43% of cars back on the road in a day or less. Hyundai Kona Electric (2018-2023)</h3>

Reliability rating 91.0%<ul><li dir="ltr"> Most common faults: 12-volt battery 17% </li> <li dir="ltr"> Average repair cost: 80% cost £0 </li> <li dir="ltr"> Typical time off road: 50% more than a week, 40% one day or less </li></ul>The second-generation Hyundai Kona Electric is one of the few sub-£40k EVs to offer an official range of more than 300 miles. It's also a well-rounded electric SUV with plenty of space for passengers and their luggage and a user-friendly dash layout. It's not as bulletproof as its petrol and hybrid siblings — they scored 98.7% and 99.0% respectively — but its score of more than 90% is still respectable. Overall 23% of the examples reported on had issues, with the 12-volt battery causing most problems. While 80% of fixes were carried out for free, some owners had to pay between £51 and £200. Half of the faults put cars out of action for more than a week, but most of the others were sorted out within a day. <h3 dir="ltr"><a href="https://www.whatcar.com/hyundai/kona/hatchback/review/n18164">Hyundai Kona Electric review</a></h3><hr /><h3 dir="ltr">9. Genesis GV60 (2022-present)</h3>

Reliability rating 90.9%<ul><li dir="ltr"> Most common faults: Sat-nav/infotainment 12%, gearbox 6%, non-motor electrics 6% </li> <li dir="ltr"> Average repair cost: £0 </li> <li dir="ltr"> Typical time off road: 71% more than a week </li></ul>A brilliant electric car, the GV60 is the best model in the fledgling Genesis brand's line-up. It helps that <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/new-car-deals/make/genesis">Genesis</a> is the luxury arm of the Hyundai Group, and the GV60 is closely related to the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/hyundai/ioniq-5/hatchback/review/n22944">Hyundai Ioniq 5</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/ev6/estate/review/n23462">Kia EV6</a>. That means it features proven technologies, and gains a respectable reliability rating. The GV60's fault rate is pretty high at 29%, but that didn't translate to big repair bills for owners because Genesis covered the cost of all the necessary work. Problems with the sat-nav/infotainment system were the biggest headache, and some owners also told us about problems with their cars' air-con, bodywork and non-motor electrics. It's great that all work was done gratis, but not so good that nearly three-quarters of faulty cars were out of action for more than a week. <h3 dir="ltr"><a href="https://www.whatcar.com/genesis/gv60/estate/review/n24373">Genesis GV60 review</a></h3><hr /><h3 dir="ltr">10. Kia Niro EV (2022-present)</h3>

Reliability rating 89.3%<ul><li dir="ltr"> Most common faults: Non-motor electrics 17%, battery pack 7%, interior trim 7% </li> <li dir="ltr"> Average repair cost: £0 </li> <li dir="ltr"> Typical time off road: 67% more than a week </li></ul>The Niro Electric is not as groundbreaking as its <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/e-niro/estate/used-review/n22663">e-Niro</a> predecessor but it's still a good all-rounder. It's practical, comfortable and has a real-world range of more than 250 miles. However, it's been far more prone to problems that can be time-consuming to fix than the e-Niro. Although non-motor electrical issues were the most frequently cited headache, there were also issues with the EV battery pack. The good news for owners is that Kia covered the cost of all repairs; the not so good news is that only 33% of faults were fixed in a day or less, the rest took more than a week. <h3 dir="ltr"><a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/niro/estate/review/n24582">Kia Niro Electric review</a></h3><hr /><h2 dir="ltr">Least reliable electric SUVs</h2><h3 dir="ltr">1. Vauxhall Mokka Electric (2020-present)</h3>

That means it shares that car's bold Vizor front-end design and on the inside there's a 12in digital instrument display, physical buttons for the climate control and media volume.  However, it has more than its fair share of problems, according to owners. They told us that 55% of their Mokka Electrics went wrong, with cars suffering a range of issues.Although a third of problems were sorted out in a day or less, 56% of broken cars were out of action for more than a week. The entry-level SE is a good choice because it offers a mix of low costs, range and equipment.That's where the good news about the ZS EV ends, though, because it has a high proportion of faults that are slow to be fixed by dealers. Owners told us that 43% of their cars went wrong with a range of issues as listed above. Only 82% of work was paid for by MG, and that left some owners will bills ranging from £1000 to more than £1500. A large and luxurious electric SUV, it combines breathtaking pace with super-hushed cruising manners. It's one of the quietest cars we've ever tested, with a spacious and luxurious interior and a great infotainment system. However, it's the sluggishness of repairs that pulls the BMW iX's score down: 91% of broken cars were in the garage for more than a week, and 73% of cars were rendered undriveable by their faults. Electrical issues were the most common complaint among the 38% of cars that went wrong. Reliability Survey gained 29,967 responses and that enabled us to report on 199 models (up to five years old) from 31 different brands. To compile the survey, conducted in association with <a href="https://www.motoreasy.com/" target="_blank">MotorEasy</a>, we ask thousands of car owners to tell us how well their cars had behaved over the previous 24 months. For every car that has suffered a fault, we ask in what area the issue occurred, plus how much it cost to repair and how long it spent in the workshop. Hybrid cars have come a long way since the arrival of the Toyota Prius in 2000. There are now hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of many new car models that have the potential to save money on fuel, particularly if you do mostly urban or short driving. The other plus point about hybrids is that they’re proving impressively robust in spite of the added complexity of their dual power systems. In the latest <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/reliability-survey-most-reliable-cars/n26137">What Car? Reliability Survey</a> only 19% of the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/plug-in-hybrid-cars/n22743">plug-in hybrids</a> (PHEVs) and regular <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/hybrid-cars/n17013">hybrid cars</a> reported on had any issues. In contrast, 22% of <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/the-best-petrol-cars/n19980">petrol</a> models went wrong, 27% of <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/electric-cars/n17000">EVs</a> had a glitch and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/the-best-diesel-cars/n20028">diesels</a> were worst of all, with a fault rate of 31%.In fact, they were the highest scoring car class in the latest survey, achieving a rating of 95.9% compared with 87.7% for EVs. Hybrid cars are also fixed for free far more often than other fuel types, especially diesel cars: 91% of hybrids were repaired at no cost to owners, while only 67% of diesels were fixed gratis. And the hybrid car owners who did have to contribute to the cost of remedial work paid by far the least: olny 2% of them had to find more than £1500 to cover fixes, while 6% of diesel owners paid out more than £1500 in repair bills.  Like other cars, the most common issues with hybrids are electrical glitches, most of which are quick to sort out. <a href="https://survey.alchemer.eu/s3/90474827/6fe2cc473d53&amp;rdt=1">The 2025 What Car? Reliability rating 100%<ul><li dir="ltr"> Most common faults: none </li> <li dir="ltr"> Average repair cost: £0 </li> <li dir="ltr"> Typical time off road: none </li></ul>The previous-generation Lexus NX is not the best used large SUV to drive because it has uninspiring handling and a sluggish six-speed automatic gearbox. However, it is your best bet if you want a fault-free hybrid large SUV.Not only is it the top scorer in this class, but it also outperforms the latest NX, which scores 97.6% and lies in seventh place in the hybrid chart in this year's survey.No NX owners reported any issues with their cars, and that meant no cars spent any time off the road getting repaired and no owners were faced with any unexpected repair bills.Owner’s view: “My car has been faultless in the two years I’ve owned it.”<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/lexus/nx/estate/used-review/n995">Used Lexus NX review</a><hr />2. Reliability rating 99.3%<ul><li dir="ltr"> Most common faults: sat-nav/infotainment system 4% </li> <li dir="ltr"> Average repair cost: £0 </li> <li dir="ltr"> Typical time off road: up to a week </li></ul>The Lexus ES is an executive car that comes with the road tax, company car tax advantages and efficiency of a hybrid, but without the hassle of plugging it in to charge it up. Like most models in the current <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/make/lexus">Lexus car range</a>, it has a petrol engine that's helped along by electric motors. This means cit an travel short distances on electricity alone, lowering this big luxurious saloon’s CO2 emissions to those of a small hatchback.  The other big advantage the ES has over many other luxury cars is that it is pretty much bulletproof when it comes to reliability. It's the highest scoring executive car in our survey, and the second highest rated model in the range after the NX. A mere 4% of the ES saloons reported on had any issues and the only problematic area was the sat-nav/infotainment system. Hyundai Kona hybrid (2019-present)

It has better fuel economy than the petrol version, and it's cheaper for both road tax and company car tax. The other big factor is dependability: only 7% of hybrid Kona models had any faults, compared with 23% of electric ones. The only headache-inducing areas on the Kona hybrid were some electrical systems, including the sat-nav/infotainment system. That meant all faulty cars could still be driven; half of issues were resolved in a day or less and the rest were sorted out in less than a week. Demonstrating the value of the five-year warranty, all remedial work was carried out free of charge. <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/hyundai/kona/hatchback/review/n17377">Hyundai Kona review</a><hr />4. Toyota RAV4 (2019-present)

Reliability rating 98.8%<ul><li dir="ltr"> Most common faults: 12-volt battery 2%, hybrid battery pack 1% </li> <li dir="ltr"> Average repair cost: 83% cost £0 </li> <li dir="ltr"> Typical time off road: 66% up to a week </li></ul>The RAV4 is a highly practical family SUV with a roomy interior and low CO2 emissions thanks to its hybrid technology. It's only available as a conventional hybrid or a plug-in hybrid that will do up to 46 miles on pure electric power. A familiar site in our reliability league tables, the RAV4 is the second highest scoring family SUV.Just 3% of the RAV4s reported on in our survey had any issues and these were restricted to problems with the 12-volt battery and hybrid battery pack. While Toyota covered the cost of 83% of repairs, that left 17% of owners having to fork out £100 to £200 to get their cars put right. Most faulty cars remained driveable, and a third were back on the road in a day or less, but the rest were out of action for up to a week. <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/toyota/rav4/4x4/review/n130">Toyota RAV4 review</a><hr />5. Lexus RX (2016-2022)

However, unlike its German rivals, it's not offered in conventional petrol or diesel form, it can only be had as a hybrid with a petrol engine assisted by a motor.  As well as the top luxury SUV for reliability, it's also the highest scoring luxury car in the latest survey, beating the likes of the BMW X5 and Range Rover Sport. Just 3% of the RXs we were told about had any problems, and these were restricted to the electrical systems, including the air-con, and the bodywork. Mercedes A-Class hybrid (2018-present)

In hybrid form it's a more dependable prospect than its main rival the BMW 330e. It also has far fewer problems than the petrol A-Class, according to owners, who told us 11% of their hybrid A-Classes went wrong compared with 21% of petrols. The only cause for concern was the interior trim, and all of these issues were sorted out free of charge. However, owners did have to be patient while getting their cars fixed because repair work could be slow. It has punchy performance, especially if you go for the 450h plug-in hybrid, and the steering is precise and its cornering abilities are more than good enough. Added to that it has a plush interior, impressive refinement and low emissions. It's not quite as good as the older NX when it comes to reliability, though. Owners told us that 13% of their cars had some sort of problem, although most were minor issues with the bodywork. Not all issues were sorted out for free: Lexus covered the cost of 89% of remedial work, but that left 11% of owners with bills ranging from £301 to £500. As well as diesel, petrol and pure electric versions, there's also a plug-in hybrid, and this is the best bet if you want a hassle free ownership experience. That's because only 10% of PHEV XC40s had any glitches, while the other engine types had around twice as many issues. A range of faults were reported by owners, including issues with the air-con, 12-volt battery, hybrid battery pack, electrics and interior trim. Although all of these were rectified at no charge, some work was fairly slow to complete. Only 20% of cars were fixed in a day or less, 60% took up to a week and the rest took longer than this. Now only available used, it's good value for money with prices starting at just £10,000 for an early model. It's also a sound bet if you're after a dependable car. Owners told us that 14% of their C-HRs had hiccups, most were with the 12-volt battery, although there were also some reports of other electrical issues, too. Remedial work was swift, with 83% of cars in and out of the garage in a day or less, and the rest sorted out in less than a week. There were some bills to pay, though. Volvo XC60 PHEV (2016-present)

As well as used-only diesel power, engine choices include a petrol-engined mild hybrid and two PHEV versions. It's the latter that we're reporting on here. We were told that 16% of PHEV XC60s had a problem, with most issues relating to the bodywork and various electrical systems including the infotainment. The good news for owners is that all cars were fixed for free. The not so good news is that some remedial work was slow. While 50% of issues were put right in a day or less, 33% of cars were out of action for more than a week. The hybrid can run for short distances on pure electric power, but if you want to complete longer drives without resorting to the petrol engine the PHEV is the best option because it will do up to 43 miles on electricity. The Kuga is the lowest scoring hybrid in our survey because it had high percentage of problems with its 12-volt battery and they were slow to get fixed. Overall 33% of cars had a problem and 19% of them were with the battery. Half or faulty cars were rendered undriveable by their problems, and 44% of them spent more than a week in the workshop. BMW 330e (2016-present)

It's economical too, because it's able to do up to 62 miles on pure electric power. Overall the 330e is a pretty dependable car; its in the bottom three for reliability because hybrid cars tend to score very highly. However, when things do go wrong they can be slow and costly to put right. Owners told us that 16% of their 330es had an issue, mostly with the engine/motor electrics and the hybrid battery pack. Just over half (53%) of faulty cars were off the road for more than a week and, although BMW footed the bill in 69% of cases, that left 23% of owners having to find more than £1500 to fix faults.   <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/3-series/saloon/review/n91">BMW 3 Series review</a><hr />3. Toyota Yaris Cross (2021-present)

It's only available only as a regular hybrid, with a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor. Like the BMW 330e, it's only in the bottom three of our league because there are so many extremely high-scoring cars in the hybrid class. Overall 24% of the Yaris Crosses reported on went wrong, with the 12-volt battery the main cuplrit. While Toyota paid for 77% of remedial work, some owners had to pay £100 to £200, and 8% told us they'd had to shell out £301 to £500 to get their cars fixed. Reliability rating 98.9%<ul><li dir="ltr"> Most common faults: non-engine electrics 4% </li> <li dir="ltr"> Average repair cost: £0 </li> <li dir="ltr"> Typical time off road: up to a week </li></ul>Large, practical and excellent value for money, the used Santa Fe is a great alternative to the usual premium front-runners for anyone looking for a dependable seven-seat SUV.It suffers very few faults, according to owners, who told us only 4% of their cars had any issues. The only areas to give any grief were various non-engine electrical systems. Demonstrating that most problems were inconsequential, all affected cars remained driveable and half were in and out of the garage in a day or less. However, the Defender bucks this trend: it's not only the highest scoring Land Rover model this year, it's also the third best seven-seater for reliability. Owners told us their cars had an impressively low fault rate of 14%. There were issues in a number of areas, including the bodywork, electrics, interior trim and steering, but most vehicles (87%) could still be driven, indicating that the problems weren't too serious. The only downside is that remedial work could often be slow, with 63% of cars out of action for more than a week. On a positive note, it's great to hear that Land Rover covered the cost of all repairs, though. <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/land-rover/defender/4x4/review/n21198">Land Rover Defender review </a><hr /><h3 dir="ltr">3. Peugeot 5008 (2017-2024)</h3>

It's also the most dependable model in the current Peugeot line-up.  Owners told us that 16% of their cars had faults, and these related to the bodywork, brakes, interior trim and non-engine electrics. None were too serious though: 75% of cars were fixed in a day or less and the rest in less than a week. Skoda Kodiaq diesel (2016-2024)</h3>

Reliability rating 94.7%<ul><li dir="ltr"> Most common faults: non-engine electrics 6% </li> <li dir="ltr"> Average repair cost: 73% cost £0 </li> <li dir="ltr"> Typical time off road: 46% one day or less </li></ul>One of life's great all-rounders, the Skoda Kodiaq offers lots of space, a swish-looking interior and relatively strong and efficient engines. And, if you opt for a diesel model, it should be pretty painless to live with. Diesel versions of the Skoda Kodiaq are a better bet than petrols if you're after a car that won't surprise you with unexpected repair bills. That's because 73% of diesel Kodiaqs were fixed for free, compared with 63% of petrols, and the priciest repair bill for a diesel car was £500 while it was more than £1500 for petrol car owners. Non-engine electrical issues were the main concern for the 20% of cars that went wrong. Repairs were generally swift: 46% of cars were fixed in a day or less and most of the rest were back on the road in less than a week. <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/skoda/kodiaq/estate/review/n17362">Skoda Kodiaq review</a><hr /><h3 dir="ltr">5. Volvo XC90 (2015-present)</h3>

It's also stress-free to live with because Volvo dealers deal with any issues quickly and efficiently. According to our survey data, the XC90 has a fairly high fault rate of 30%, but none of the problems stopped cars from being driven, and two-thirds were put right in less than a week. Costs were minimal too, with 90% of cars fixed without charge and the remaining 10% of faults costing less than £100 apiece to fix. The main gripe was with the sat-nav / infotainment system, affecting 11% of faulty cars, and there were also some reports of issues with the 12-volt battery, electrics, exhaust and fuel system. <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volvo/xc90/4x4/review/n99">Volvo XC90 review</a><hr /><h3 dir="ltr">6. Mercedes GLB (2019-present)</h3>

Reliability rating 92.3%<ul><li dir="ltr"> Most common faults: non-engine electrics 18% </li> <li dir="ltr"> Average repair cost: £0 </li> <li dir="ltr"> Typical time off road: 54% more than a week, 39% one day or less </li></ul>Although it's smaller than many seven-seat SUVs, the Mercedes GLB is also a practical choice because its boxy shape means it has loads of interior space and lots of useful storage cubbies, and the second row consists of three seats that can slide and fold independently.The GLB is fairly prone to problems: 35% of the cars in our survey went wrong, most with electrical issues. However, every fault was fixed for free by Mercedes, so no owners were left out of pocket. Some owners did have to be patient, though, because more than half of the faulty cars were in the workshop for more than a week. <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mercedes-benz/glb/estate/review/n20538">Mercedes GLB review</a><hr /><h3 dir="ltr">7. Kia Sorento (2020-present)</h3>

Reliability rating 92.1%<ul><li dir="ltr"> Most common faults: non-engine electrics 19% </li> <li dir="ltr"> Average repair cost: £0 </li> <li dir="ltr"> Typical time off road: 50% one day or less, 25% more than a week </li></ul>The 2024 Sorento is not the cheapest seven-seat SUV but it is very practical and a great all-rounder with lots of equipment and a massive boot. It has a fairly high fault rate at 31%, but Kia honoured its seven-year warranty in all instances, covering the cost of all fault repairs. The biggest issue for owners was electrical faults, which affected 19% of the cars reported on. There were also some complaints about the 12-volt battery, bodywork and interior trim. All faulty cars could still be driven though, and half were back on the road in a day or less and a quarter were fixed in less than a week, but the rest took more than a week to put right.  <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/sorento/4x4/review/n18">Kia Sorento review</a><hr /><h3 dir="ltr">8. Skoda Kodiaq petrol (2016-2024)</h3>

Reliability rating 91.83%<ul><li dir="ltr"> Most common faults: Non-engine electrics 10% sat-nav / infotainment system 10% </li> <li dir="ltr"> Average repair cost: 63% cost £0, 13% cost more than £1500 </li> <li dir="ltr"> Typical time off road: 67% one day or less, 11% more than a week </li></ul>It's unusual for a petrol model to be less reliable than its diesel counterpart, but that's the case with the Skoda Kodiaq. Petrol Kodiaqs went wrong slightly more frequently than diesels: 23% had faults, compared with 20% of petrols. Non-engine electrics and the sat-nav / infotainment system were the main headaches, each accounting for 10% of faults. The brake system and bodywork were also issues for some owners. The biggest difference between petrol and diesel Kodiaqs is cost, though. Only 63% of petrol model faults were fixed for free (73% of diesel ones were paid for), and 25% of issues cost up to £500 to put right and 13% cost more than £1500 per fault. At least all remedial work was done quickly: 67% of cars were out of the workshop in a day or less, and most of the rest were fixed in less than seven days. <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/skoda/kodiaq/estate/review/n17362">Skoda Kodiaq review</a><hr /><h3 dir="ltr">9. Land Rover Discovery (2017-present)</h3>

However, it does have more than its fair share of faults: owners told us 40% of their cars had at least one issue. The 12-volt battery was the main bugbear, followed by the engine and non-engine electrical systems including the sat-nav / infotainment system. Most owners were well looked after on costs: 92% of faults were fixed for free by Land Rover and its dealers. However, its reliability record isn't great: it's the lowest scoring Audi model in our survey and it's the worst seven-seater. Although the Audi Q7's fault rate of 33% isn't sky high, the fact that many repairs were eye-wateringly expensive dented the ownership experience for some. Audi only covered the cost of 50% of repair work, leaving some owners with bills of up to £750 and a quarter had to pay more than £1500 to get their cars fixed. Most cars could still be driven, but only 13% of issues were resolved in a day or less; 63% took up to a week and the rest took longer than a week. Owners told us a hefty 61% of their Tarracos went wrong, with sat-nav / infotainment system faults accounting for 35% of those issues. There were also a fairly high proportion of problems with other electrical systems and the engine.Only 71% of faults were fixed for free by Seat and its dealer, leaving many of the owners who had to pay with bills of up to £200 per fault. Although all faulty cars could still be driven, 29% were in the workshop for more than a week. Land Rover covered the cost of 78% of repair work, but that left 16% of owners with bills that topped £1500 per fault. Reliability Survey gained 29,967 responses and that enabled us to report on 199 models (up to five years old) from 31 different brands. To compile the survey, conducted in association with <a href="https://www.motoreasy.com/" target="_blank">MotorEasy</a>, we ask thousands of car owners to tell us how well their cars had behaved over the previous 24 months. For every car that has suffered a fault, we ask in what area the issue occurred, plus how much it cost to repair and how long it spent in the workshop. Not so long ago, hybrids were the preserve of Hollywood stars, environmentally conscious 'early adopters' and the odd&nbsp;minicab driver looking to save a bit of money on fuel.

Since the collapse in demand for diesel, however, they have become&nbsp;much more popular, and it's easy to see why, with&nbsp;low tax bills and&nbsp;impressive MPG figures&nbsp;just a couple of the perks they offer.

There are two types of hybrid: 'self-charging'&nbsp;models, which mix petrol&nbsp;and electric power in an effort to maximise&nbsp;efficiency, and&nbsp;plug-in hybrids that can travel many miles purely on electricity before their engines need to cut in. This category is for the former type of cars.

Anyone with a larger family or the need to transport up to six people occasionally will appreciate the added versatility of a seven-seat car.Buyers can choose between <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/large-suvs/n17006">large SUVs</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/mpvs-and-people-carriers/n17001">MPVs</a>, but when it comes to <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/most-reliable-cars/n26137">reliability survey</a> results, they need to be rather selective because MPVs generally score lower than seven-seat SUVs. Overall, seven-seaters aren't one of the highest-scoring car classes for reliability, either, gaining a rating of 92.9% in last year's survey and 90.8% this time round.
