The Cupra Ateca delivers huge performance and impressive practicality for a competitive price, but the Ford Puma ST will deliver even bigger thrills for less money. If you want a sports SUV with an upmarket interior and a cosseting ride, we recommend trying the Cupra Formentor.

The top-spec VZ3 trim adds some even sportier bits, including special 19in alloy wheels, a sports steering wheel and performance front brakes from Brembo (which are otherwise optional on the other two trims). It’s rather expensive though, making it hard to recommend.

The 2.0-litre turbo engine is essentially the same as you’ll find in Volkswagen's flagship Golf R hot hatch, so there’s more than enough firepower to get your blood pumping – 296bhp to be exact. In our tests it slingshot the Cupra Ateca from 0-60mph in just 4.7sec, while the top speed is 152mph 153mph – numbers which are comparable to the BMW X2 M35i, Volkswagen T-Roc R and Cupra Formentor.
