In exchange, it offers sharp coupé SUV looks and a smarter interior. It'll still seat four tall adults and has a decent boot, so it's not impractical, it handles well and, if you stick with our favourite 1.5 TSI V1 version, it's well priced and well equipped.

See full engine specsThe flagship Formentor engine has 306bhp and feels properly rapid when it comes on song from 2000rpm. Indeed, if you use launch control to maximise this model’s four-wheel-drive traction, it will ping you from rest to 62mph in 4.9sec – about the same time, give or take, as the BMW X2 M35i and Volkswagen T-Roc R.
