Review

The headline news about the Dacia Duster range is its ultra-low starting price – far lower than any family SUV rival. But we recommend the mid-level Comfort trim, which is priced inline with an MG ZS, but the Duster will still end up costing you less to run over three years. It has some obvious shortcomings, such as its so-so handling and low-rent interior, but if you want cheap, no-frills motoring with more than enough everyday practicality, it's unrivalled.

get the best price

You’re being asked to fork out a fairly steep premium for this upgrade, but it's still cheap in comparison to mainstream rivals and you do get plenty of goodies. These include a trip computer, cruise control, 16in alloy wheels, privacy glass, heated and electrically adjustable door mirrors, electric rear windows, a 7.0in touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, sat-nav, rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, and even some simple things, like a passenger vanity mirror and a plusher (but still plastic) steering wheel rim. That's why it's our pick.

The diesel engine generates a fair bit of vibration, especially at lower revs, but it provides strong performance and is impressively efficient. Trouble is that it costs quite a lot more than the petrol option.
