Going electric has fixed some of the weak points of the 3 Crossback – but not all of them. It’s quieter, for example, and a little less fractious along bumpy roads. Objectively, though, rivals such as the Kia Niro EV have a longer range, are better to drive and are much more practical.

This is our pick of the range, adding sat-nav, keyless entry and start, a sound-deadening acoustic windscreen, and extra USB points.

Only available in Ultra Prestige trim, it's quick but doesn't feel as strong low-down as similarly powerful rivals such as the Audi Q2 35 TFSI. We'd stick to the Puretech 130.
