The Grande Punto undercuts many of its key rivals on price, and running costs should be competitive, too. The 1.4-litre engine averages more than 45mpg and emits 139g/km of CO2, while both models sit in insurance group 7.
Fiat Grande Punto Hatchback quality & reliability
Everything inside the Grande Punto looks good and feels sturdy enough, but the controls don't have the same solidity as a Renault Clio's. The 2011 JD Power survey also revealed a few suspect areas, including the heating and ventilation systems, while rating mechanical reliability as merely average.
Fiat Grande Punto Hatchback safety & security
The Punto was awarded the maximum five-star Euro NCAP crash-test rating. Both models come with driver and passenger airbags, which vary how forcefully they deploy according to the severity of the impact. An engine immobiliser is standard, too, but deadlocks aren't fitted. And, to get side and curtain airbags, you'll need to invest in the Safety Pack, which also includes ESP.
