The Ford Edge is reasonably spacious and extremely well equipped. Those are the highlights, but elsewhere it’s pretty mediocre. Although Ford wants you to think of it as a premium product and has priced it accordingly, its handling, ride and refinement are below par compared with the Peugeot 5008, let alone the Audi A5 and Volvo XC60. Its resale values are also not in the same league as many of its more rounded rivals. Comes with sporty styling, bigger 20in alloy wheels and sports suspension. Sadly, it’s expensive and the wheels and suspension changes ruin the ride, which the rest of the upgrades — including an electrically adjustable passenger seat, heated steering wheel and 12-speaker B&O stereo — don’t make up for. It’s our recommendation only because it’s the cheapest version you can have with the higher-performance 235bhp diesel engine.

A better option for anyone who needs a bit of oomph for towing, or even making decent progress with a fully loaded car. Even with 235bhp, it still can’t match the pace of the Q5 and XC60 2.0-litre diesel but offers similar get-up-and-go to the Peugeot 5008 2.0 BlueHDi 180. The spread of mid-range torque pulls you along in a stress-free manner, even if ultimate performance is brisk at best.
