The Ford Fiesta is superb to drive, smart inside and well equipped, plus it offers a broad range of trim levels – from the affordable Trend to the SUV-inspired Active – to cater for many tastes and budgets. It’s one of the very best small cars you can buy, but the rival Volkswagen Polo just has the edge for ride comfort, standard safety and rear seat space.

Trim: Titanium X

A bit too pricey to recommend. Titanium X is well equipped, with keyless entry, part-leather seats and a punchy B&O stereo fitted as standard, but cheaper versions of the Fiesta make more financial sense.

Engine: 1.0 EcoBoost 125

The 99bhp 1.0-litre is great, but this 123bhp version is even better without costing you much more to buy or run. It is a responsive, free-revving, sweet unit that's a peach to drive, and comes with a slick, six-speed manual gearbox.
