The Ford Fiesta is superb to drive, smart inside and well equipped, plus it offers a broad range of trim levels – from the affordable Trend to the SUV-inspired Active – to cater for many tastes and budgets. It’s one of the very best small cars you can buy, but it can prove quite pricey in higher trims and the rival Volkswagen Polo just has the edge for ride comfort, safety and rear-seat space.

The Fiesta ST's 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine is a cracker. It's so much more soulful than the Volkswagen Polo GTI's and pulls more heartily from low revs than the Hyundai i20N's, but still spins freely up to its limiter and gets you from 0-62mph in a peppy 6.5sec. That performance is accompanied by a muscular, growling soundtrack and it's also capable of averaging 40mpg in the real world if you drive it sensibly.
