The Ford Galaxy is a brilliant large MPV that doesn't impose many compromises. With its huge boot and spacious seven seats it fulfils the same practical role as rivals such as the Volkswagen Sharan, but is quieter and more composed on the road. We recommend the 148bhp diesel engine for its power and competitive CO2 and fuel economy figures. For the ultimate in practical family transportation, the Galaxy is a very solid choice.get the best price

Stick to Zetec trim to keep the costs down. That brings 17in alloy wheels, power-folding mirrors, a heated windscreen, automatic wipers, dual-zone climate control and all the infotainment features such as sat-nav, a DAB radio, Bluetooth and an 8.0in touchscreen.

The 2.0-litre 148bhp engine (EcoBlue 150) is the more popular of the two engines, because it pulls the Galaxy along at a decent lick while also proving flexible enough from town roads to motorways. It's also quite quiet once it has warmed up and offers a better blend of performance, efficiency and costs. The six-speed manual gearbox is slick but the auto 'box has issues swapping between drive and reverse and can be clunky.
Great to drive, but some rivals are cheaper to run
Incredibly versatile, but don’t expect the Toyota Proace Verso...
Very spacious but handling and interior quality are likely to...
