The Kuga is a decent large SUV in any guise but really makes sense if you opt for the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model. It's one of the best plug-in hybrid large SUVs there is, providing a decent electric-only range, good fuel economy, tidy enough handling, and all for a sensible price. Shortfalls include the iffy interior quality and the relatively small boot.

The entry-level Kuga trim is Zetec. Standard equipment includes an 8.0in touchscreen infotainment system, sat-nav, a DAB radio, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a wireless smartphone charging pad, front and rear parking sensors, sports seats with adjustable lumbar support, a leather-trimmed steering wheel and gear lever, cruise control, automatic lights, 17in alloy wheels, air conditioning, privacy glass, power-folding door mirrors and a heated windscreen, as well as sliding and reclining rear seats. This looks to be a good trim if you're looking to keep costs down with one of the cheaper engine variants.

This entry-level 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol only has 118bhp, and 0-62mph takes a leisurely 11.6sec. We suspect it’ll be worth upgrading to the Ecoboost 150 for a bit more oomph. Only available with a six-speed manual gearbox and it has a towing capacity of 1600kg. CO2 emissions are on the low side for the class, although beaten by the Citroen C5 Aircross.
