Review

The Kuga is a decent large SUV in any guise but really makes sense if you opt for the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model. It's one of the best plug-in hybrid large SUVs there is, providing a decent electric-only range, good fuel economy, tidy enough handling, and all for a sensible price. Shortfalls include the iffy interior quality and the relatively small boot.

ST-Line X upgrades the ST-Line trim by adding 19in alloy wheels, a hands-free electric tailgate, a panoramic roof, 10-way electrically adjustable and heated front seats and a powered tailgate.

Mild-hybrid tech helps this 2.0-litre 148bhp diesel engine to emit less CO2 than the less powerful 1.5-litre. Performance is similar to the Ecoboost 150, in other words it's adequate, but you can’t have an automatic gearbox. It can at least tow up to 1900kg, 100kg more than the Ecoboost 150.
