The Kuga is a decent large SUV in any guise but really makes sense if you opt for the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model. It's one of the best plug-in hybrid large SUVs there is, providing a decent electric-only range, good fuel economy, tidy enough handling, and all for a sensible price. In addition to Zetec trim this well-equipped yet reasonably priced version gives you 18in alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, part-leather seats, ambient interior lighting, a 10-speaker B&O stereo, LED headlights and automatic wipers. It's also the entry-level trim if you want the plug-in hybrid that's our pick of the engines. We'd suggest going for Titanium over ST-Line trim, which is pricier and has sports suspension that degrades the ride.

Mild-hybrid tech helps this 2.0-litre 148bhp diesel engine to emit less CO2 than the less powerful 1.5-litre. Performance is similar to the Ecoboost 150, in other words it's adequate, but you can’t have an automatic gearbox. It can at least tow up to 1900kg, 100kg more than the Ecoboost 150.
