The Ford Kuga is a decent large SUV in any guise, but it makes real sense if you opt for the hybrid or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models. The hybrids have economy that private buyers will appreciate, while the plug-in hybrid is one of the best large SUVs of its kind for company car drivers, providing a decent electric-only range, good fuel economy, tidy enough handling, and all for a sensible price. Shortfalls include the iffy interior quality and the relatively small boot.

As with the ST-Line model, you should try it before you commit to buying because the ‘X’ version has larger 19in alloys that can provide an unsettled ride on rough roads. There are some nice touches, though, such as a panoramic roof and heated front seats and steering wheel for cold winter mornings.

The plug-in hybrid model pairs a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor for a total of 222bhp and 0-60mph in 8.6sec in our testing. You can drive in full-electric mode, full petrol mode, or a mix between the two as the car sees fit. Electric mode gives instant punch and, in the hybrid setting, the change between petrol and electric is almost seamless. You’ll only really notice the engine has kicked in when you hear it start to murmur away up inclines and when overtaking because of the CVT gearbox. A good official electric-only range of 35 miles help keep company car tax low, and it should do up to 50mpg in the real world even when the battery has run out.
