Our overall rating:
The Ford Mondeo Estate is a big family car that competes with rivals such as the Volkswagen Passat Estate, Volvo V60, Mazda 6 Tourer and even the slightly smaller but cheaper Skoda Octavia Estate. It’s priced competitively against direct rivals, undercutting the VW and Volvo by a substantial amount, and matching the Mazda on most cost fronts.
The Mondeo also handles better than every rival, other than the more expensive, smaller BMW 3 Series Touring, and has a very spacious, practical cabin. Only a slightly cheap-feeling cabin finish, potentially poor resale values and a fussy touchscreen interface let it down.
There’s a good range of engines, including some petrol options and efficient diesels, but we’d recommend the 113bhp 1.6 diesel as the best option for balancing performance and costs, or 148bhp 2.0 diesels are also recommendable for those who value more gutsy performance, with our favoured Zetec trim offering the best value.
