Review

A sensible small car with plenty of space and equipment, the Hyundai i20 is an affordable and capable city cruiser. Its engines feel a bit gutless compared with rivals in the Ford Fiesta, though, and you’ll find yourself wanting a bit more oomph on the motorway.

Trim: Play

Mid-range Play adds sat-nav and live data, such as traffic updates, although most people will be able to use their phone for sat-nav via the smartphone mirroring capability. There’s also 16in alloy wheels and unique styling details.

Engine: 1.0 T-GDi

The 1.0 turbo engine is certainly the best performer in the range, coping easily around town and able to handle longer motorway journeys. Even so, these engines don’t come close to the kind of impressive, flexible performance offered by Ford’s Ecoboost or Volkswagen’s TSI engines.
