Review

A sensible small car with plenty of space and equipment, the Hyundai i20 is an affordable and capable city cruiser. Its engines feel a bit gutless compared with rivals in the Ford Fiesta, though, and you’ll find yourself wanting a bit more oomph on the motorway.

Trim: SE

We’d recommend stepping up to SE, which gets alloy wheels, cruise control, high-beam assistance, a variable-height boot floor, a better sound system, rear parking sensors and a leather-effect steering wheel with buttons on it. In addition, SE gets useful safety equipment such as automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance.

Engine: 1.0 T-GDi

The 1.0 turbo engine is certainly the best performer in the range, coping easily around town and able to handle longer motorway journeys. Even so, these engines don’t come close to the kind of impressive, flexible performance offered by Ford’s Ecoboost or Volkswagen’s TSI engines.
