Review

With decent performance, palatable running costs and an easy-to-use infotainment system, the Kona range has much in its favour. However, while the Kona Electric impresses with its hot-hatch acceleration and competitive range between charges, the petrol-engined models are shown up by the hybrid’s lower running costs. Rival small SUVs have more interior space, too, so the Kona struggles to stand out in its class.

SE trim gets an impressive 7.0in touchscreen infotainment system, as well as 17in alloys, LED daytime running lights, automatic headlights, rear parking sensors and a reversing camera. It’s the best-value trim and our pick of the range.

This 39 kWh battery is only available on the all-electric Kona EV. It produces 134bhp and sees the entry-level Kona EV accelerate from 0-62mph in an entirely respectable 9.7 seconds. A claimed range of 180 miles should also be enough for most drivers, but if you plan on owning a Kona EV as your only car, we would recommend stepping up to the larger 64kWh with its impressive 278 mile range.
