Review

With decent performance, palatable running costs and an easy-to-use infotainment system, the Kona range has much in its favour. However, while the Kona Electric impresses with its hot-hatch acceleration and competitive range between charges, the petrol-engined models are shown up by the hybrid’s lower running costs. Rival small SUVs have more interior space, too, so the Kona struggles to stand out in its class.

Trim: Premium SE

Premium SE adds extra safety kit, such as blindspot detection and rear cross-traffic alert, a head-up display and heated seats on top of everything you get on Premium trim.

Engine: 150kW

This 64kWh electric motor is only available on the all-electric Kona EV. With 201bhp the 64kWh Kona EV can accelerate from 0-62mph in a hot hatch rivalling 7.6 seconds. However, when it comes to electric cars, performance isn’t just about how quickly you can speed up; it’s about how far you can get between charges. In our Real Range tests, the Kona Electric managed 259 miles, which is roughly on a par with the Kia e-Niro (our 2019 Car of the Year) and a lot farther than the Leaf or e-208 can manage. Impressive.
