Our favourite F-Type engine is the P450, a supercharged 5.0-litre V8 with 444bhp. It’s noticeably quicker and more muscular than the 2.0-litre, providing enough acceleration to pin you back in your seat, with a snarling exhaust note that turns into a guttural roar as you chase the red line. It’s available with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive and is markedly more expensive than the P300, but it feels significantly more special.

Jaguars are consistently among the best-handling cars of their kind, with the firm’s model range encompassing the XE, XF and XJ saloons, the F-Type sports cars and multiple SUVs.

Jaguar was actually relatively late to launch its first SUV, the F-Pace, but it quickly followed it up with the smaller E-Pace and the all-electric I-Pace.

That SUV range will keep growing, too, with larger and more luxurious SUVs planned to take on the Porsche Cayenne and the Range Rover from sister brand Land Rover.

Jaguar F-Type Convertible

The Jaguar F-Type Convertible is certainly a tempting prospect, especially with the gloriously noisy V8 sat under the bonnet. It looks good, offers exhilarating pace and handles tidily on a windy road. Even so, it's not quite as good or enjoyable to drive as its chief sports car rivals, so we’d look at the likes of the Porsche 718 Boxster instead. 

What we're looking for:<ul><li>Wind-in-the-hair excitement</li> <li>Roof that’s quick and easy to raise and lower</li> <li>Comfortable seating for four adults</li> <li>Sufficient practicality for everyday use</li> <li>Little wind buffeting</li> <li>Quietness, whether the roof is up or down</li> <li>Minimal shaking and shimmying over bumps</li></ul>

Despite the British weather, UK car buyers are among the biggest enthusiasts for wind-in-your-hair motoring, so convertibles have always been surprisingly popular here. It’s best to be able to react to the fickle climate, though, so we’re after a roof that opens (and closes) slickly and quickly and good top-down cruising refinement.

There are precious few bespoke drop-tops these days, so your choice of models is generally limited to soft-top versions of existing models. Mini will sell you a drop-top version of its style-focused hatchback, if you’re after a bit of flair.&nbsp;

The <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/a5/sports/review/n17253">Audi A5 Cabriolet</a>, meanwhile, brings all of the benefits of the regular <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/a5/hatchback/review/n170">A5</a> – refined engines and a beautifully finished interior.
