Used Jaguar XJ 2010-2019 reliability review

The Jaguar XJ is a lot of car for the money and will appeal to keen drivers, but running costs will be high.

What should I look for in a used Jaguar XJ?

The Jag is a large car, so check the front and rear of the car very carefully for any scuffs or dents picked up in car parks. Also look at the large alloy wheels to make sure they haven’t picked up any kerb damage.

XJ owners seem to be divided into two camps, those who have had very few problems with their cars and therefore love it, and those who have experienced many smaller electrical issues that have put them off it. There have indeed been issues with the electrical systems based around the sat-nav and the infotainment, so check those carefully, along with all the electrically adjustable seats.

Diesels have had problems with the DPF filter so check that any work that has been carried out has been done by a Jaguar dealer or a reputable specialist. Likewise any work on the engines, and always check for a full service history.

As far as reliability goes, there's some good news. The XJ finished top in the luxury car class in our most recent reliability survey, with an excellent overall score of 94.3%. However, Jaguar as a brand didn't fare so well, in the most recent survey finishing in a disappointing 26th place out of 31 manufacturers.

Is a used Jaguar XJ reliable?

Used Jaguar XJ 2011-2019 infotainment

Much more so than you might imagine. While Jaguar languished in 29th place out of 32 in our list of most reliable used car brands, the XJ fared rather better. In fact, owners named it the second most reliable used luxury car in 2024: only 14% went wrong, and the only area of concern was non-engine electrics.

Reliability rating 95.8%

The 2010-2019 Jaguar XJ is a rare beast among Jaguar models, in that it consistently scores well for reliability. Only 14% had any issues, all concerning non-engine electrical systems and the exhaust. Jaguar covered the cost of all repairs, but its technicians were slow; all the cars reported spending more than a week off the road.

Used Jaguar XJ reliability: the owners' view

As part of our annual Reliability Survey, What Car? readers said the XJ had mixed reliability results.

Several owners praised the XJ for its overall durability, particularly with the petrol models, which were noted to be less prone to issues. However, diesel models had more reported problems, including warning lights and engine faults. One reader mentioned a persistent issue with the diesel particulate filter, leading to costly repairs.

When it comes to dealer service, opinions vary. Some found the dealership staff helpful and responsive, quickly addressing issues under warranty. However, others experienced frustration with lengthy repair times and parts availability. A few owners cited poor communication from dealerships, leading to dissatisfaction with the service process.

Overall, while the Jaguar XJ is admired for its luxury, its reliability, particularly in diesel variants, and inconsistent dealer service left some owners less than impressed.
