The Jeep Compass has impressive off-road credentials, but its poor road manners and noisy engines mean it's ultimately off the pace

Trim: Longitude

Longitude models get a larger 8.4in infotainment screen that incorporates Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as a reversing camera, keyless entry, 17in alloy wheels, part-synthetic-leather seats with lumbar support, dual-zone climate control, power folding door mirrors and front foglights. This trim represents the best value in the range.

Engine: 2.0 Multijet 140

This engine is very boomy and sends some vibrations through the pedals and steering wheel. It isn’t that powerful, but there’s enough torque to cope with mild off-road routes and doesn’t feel too breathless over longer journeys.
