The Jeep Compass has impressive off-road credentials, but its poor road manners and noisy engines mean it's ultimately off the pace

Trim: Trailhawk

This off-road-focused model will take you the furthest off the beaten track, thanks to increased approach and departure angles and a ground clearance that’s 20mm higher than other models in the range. It’s not cheap, though.

Engine: 2.0 Multijet 170

The strongest engine in the line-up is only available with all-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox. It easily gets the Compass up to motorway speeds and, once there, it’s the most hushed engine – but it’s still not quiet.
