The Kia Ceed Sportswagon is competitive in lots of areas but, unlike the best rival estates, it fails to be outstanding anywhere and give us a compelling reason to recommend it over the better-handling Ford Focus, the more practical Skoda Octavia, or the more refined and comfortable Volkswagen Golf.

We suspect most buyers will find that the entry-level 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine is brisk enough for their needs. Although it needs working fairly hard to gain speed in a hurry, it’s fine if you’re not in a rush. Just bear in mind that the Skoda Octavia Estate’s equivalent 1.0 is more flexible and refined.
