Review

While the fully electric Kia e-Niro’s vast electric range is something of an exception and a massive reason to purchase, the rest of the Niro’s package has never been that exciting. So, while the Hybrid and PHEV models are well equipped, they’re not that great to drive and not that practical either. If you’re a company car driver looking to save on tax, the PHEV is worth consideration, but for everyone else simply looking for a top family SUV, look to the wider class, which includes far better models including the Peugeot 3008, Seat Ateca and Skoda Karoq.

Trim: 2

Even entry-level 2 trim is well equipped, with dual-zone climate control, 16in alloy wheels, automatic lights and wipers, power-folding door mirrors, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, adaptive cruise control, a six-speaker stereo, rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, automatic emergency braking and lane assist. The infotainment package includes an 8.0in touchscreen, a DAB radio, Bluetooth, USB connectors, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Engine: 1.6 GDi Hybrid

Expect impressive efficiency, especially around town, but adequate rather than blistering acceleration – 0-60mph takes 11.1sec. It’s quick enough for everyday use, but still slower than many other alternatives in the family SUV and hybrid class.
