While the fully electric Kia e-Niro’s vast electric range is something of an exception and a massive reason to purchase, the rest of the Niro’s package has never been that exciting. So, while the Hybrid and PHEV models are well equipped, they’re not that great to drive and not that practical either. If you’re a company car driver looking to save on tax, the PHEV is worth consideration, but for everyone else simply looking for a top family SUV, look to the wider class, which includes far better models including the Peugeot 3008, Seat Ateca and Skoda Karoq.

Mid-level 3 is our recommended trim and adds full leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, 8-way electrically adjustable (including lumbar adjustment) heated front seats, wireless phone charging, front parking sensors, and a larger 10.25in infotainment screen with in-built sat-nav and online features. Crucially, on the e-Niro, it also brings the larger 64kWh battery, to give a real world range of over 250 miles.
