Stick to the lower trim levels, which offer the best value for money, and the Sportage is worth a look, with decent rear space and a sensible boot. However, we think other Family SUVs, such as the Skoda Karoq, are better options – the Karoq is even more practical and better to drive. That’s because the Sportage isn't that comfortable, its engines are noisy and limited in range, and it lacks an essential piece of safety kit (AEB) on all but the top trim.

Entry-level 2 trim is the best value Sportage and our favourite as a result. You get 17in alloy wheels, an 8.0in touchscreen with DAB radio, Bluetooth, sat nav, Android Auto and Apple Carplay, all-round electric windows, heated front and rear seats, driver’s adjustable lumbar support, dual-zone climate control, auto lights and auto wipers. Cruise control takes the stress out of motorway work, and there’s lane keep assist, too.

With 134bhp it offers solid, flexible performance that will pull you up to motorways speeds perfectly easily, even with a fully loaded car. It's our choice, and comes with a 48v mild-hybrid system. That help it achieve competitive CO2 emissions but it’s not RDE2 emissions compliant, which means there's a 4% diesel surcharge if you pay company car tax. We managed a healthy 45mpg with a mix of driving — but it's noisier than its rivals' equivalent engines and not as muscular as larger 2.0-litre rivals.
