Stick to the lower trims and the Sportage is good value for money, comes with a decent amount of rear space and a decent boot. However, we think other Family SUVs, such as the Skoda Karoq, are better options. The Sportage isn't that comfortable, has noisy engines that aren't especially fuel-efficient, and the higher-spec models are very pricey.

Trim: GT-Line

This sporty trim builds on 2 grade with 19in wheels, black leather seats with red piping, dark chrome trim outside, LED front and rear lights and a black headlining. As the changes are mostly cosmetic and the bigger wheels hurt the ride comfort, we’d save the money and stick to '2' trim.

Engine: 1.6 CRDi 48V ISG

With 134bhp it offers solid, flexible performance that will pull you up to motorways speeds perfectly easily, even with a fully loaded car. It's our choice, and available with a 48v mild-hybrid system; that doesn't add anything to the performance, just makes it more efficient. It's pretty efficient — we managed a healthy 45mpg with a mix of driving — but it's noiser than its rivals' equivalent engines and not as quick.
