The model
Read full reviewThe Land Rover Defender is a rugged SUV that fuses fantastic off-road ability, especially with the optional locking rear differential, with accomplished on-road manners. If that's the blend of abilities you're after, it's effectively in a class of one. But the Jeep Wrangler is even better in the rough stuff, while premium SUVs, including the Audi Q5 and Q7, are more comfortable. With its bigger boot, the 110 will make the most sense for many, but the 90 is usefully more compact and the better off-roader.

See full equipmentSE gives you luxuries such as 20in wheels, the clearview rear-view mirror we mentioned in the visibility section, an electric steering column, 12-way electric memory front seats, a Meridian sound system with a subwoofer, keyless entry, front fog lights and Premium LED headlights with signature day-time running lights (the latter aping the look of the original Defender’s round lights). Blind spot monitoring and a system to alert you of vehicles about to cross your path when reversing are also bundled in.
The engine
See full engine specsThe P300, which is a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol with 296bhp, certainly has plenty of power, but it needs to be revved pretty hard if you want to make swift progress. Do this and you’ll also see the economy drop into the mid-teens.
