The Land Rover Defender is a rugged SUV that fuses fantastic off-road ability with decent on-road manners. If that's the blend of abilities you're after, it's effectively in a class of one. It's available in three body styles so you can have anything from five to eight seats. We think the 110 model in seven-seat form makes the most sense for larger families.

This is reserved for the most pricey 5.0 V8 petrol variant. It's supplied in matt Carpathian grey paint with a black roof and bonnet, and vast 22in wheels. Inside, there's grippy suede-effect material on the seats and steering wheel

This thundering 5.0-litre V8 petrol competes with the likes of the Mercedes-AMG G63. It has 518bhp and does 0-62mph in as little as 5.2sec. Just don't think about the official average fuel economy of less than 20mpg or the list price.
