The Discovery Sport, especially in seven-seat form, is far more practical and family friendly than rivals such as the Audi Q5 and BMW X3. Those German alternatives are ultimately more comfortable, classier and fuel-efficient, though.

Trim: HSE

This top-spec trim comes with all the toys you'd ever need including keyless entry, a Meridian sound system, adaptive cruise control and 14-way electric seats. However, it's pricey and comes on big 20in wheels that don't help the low-speed ride.

Engine: 2.0 D180

This 2.0-litre diesel might be noticeably slower than similarly powerful rivals, but it's just about brisk enough on the road. We'd recommend upgrading to the D240 if you'll regularly have a full car or tow, however.
