The Land Rover Discovery is a very capable luxury SUV. It's desirable, roomy, nicely finished inside and quite at home on the road. It's much more useful than most of its rivals off-road, too. The D250 diesel engine is excellent and in S trim it undercuts the competition. If you have a bigger budget then it's also worth checking out the Audi Q7 and huge BMW X7.

This is one of the cheapest engines in the range, costing barely any more than the entry-level P300. Despite this, the 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel has more low-down urgency even though it ‘only’ has 246bhp. We managed 0-60mph in a respectable 7.7sec and economy in the low 30s, making it our pick of the range.
