The Land Rover Discovery is a very capable luxury SUV. It's desirable, roomy, nicely finished inside and quite at home on the road. It's much more useful than most of its rivals off-road, too. The D250 diesel engine is excellent and in S trim it undercuts the competition. If you have a bigger budget then it's also worth checking out the Audi Q7 and huge BMW X7.

At the top of the tree, R-Dynamic HSE trim gives you 22in wheels, fancier ambient LED lighting inside and upgraded LED headlights outside, heated and cooled seats, 20-way adjustable heated and cooled seats, a 700w surround sound stereo and adaptive cruise control. At this price, we’d be looking at an Audi Q7 or BMW X7, though.

We heartily recommend the refined 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel D300 if you want a bit more pace in your Discovery. Its plentiful low-down punch makes it an ideal fit for a hefty SUV with a decent turn of pace when needed (we managed 0-60mph in 6.6sec). It’ll even top 30mpg when driven carefully.
