Some rivals are faster and more fun to drive, but few are as comfortable or refined as the Range Rover Sport. We’d advise looking at a D300 diesel unless the P400e works for your lifestyle or bank balance. Stick to the lower trim levels, too, as costs soon shoot up.

This entry-level trim keeps the price from getting too silly and comes with lots of equipment, so it’s the one we’d go for. Electrically adjustable leather seats, dual-zone climate control, a reversing camera, all-round parking sensors, a touchscreen sat-nav system, heated front and rear seats, an electrically operated tailgate and 20in alloy wheels are all standard. There’s still a lot of desirable equipment on the options list, mind you, so factor in even higher monthly bills once you’ve added a few choice extras.

This entry-level 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel engine is available only with HSE and HSE Silver trim. The sprint from 0-62mph takes a leisurely 8.5sec while claimed economy is in the mid to low thirties. We’d recommend upgrading to the punchier D300 as there’s virtually no efficiency penalty.
