Some rivals are faster and more fun to drive, but few are as comfortable or refined as the Range Rover Sport. We’d advise looking at a D300 diesel unless the P400e works for your lifestyle or bank balance. Stick to the lower trim levels, too, as costs soon shoot up.

Visually you get 22in wheels (21s on the P400e), a black exterior pack, privacy glass and an all black interior, too. The 22in wheel’s effect on the ride is enough to put us off alone.

The D300 is our favourite of the Range Rover Sport’s engines. It’s a 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel that’s impressively smooth and has plenty of performance from low down in the rev range. Flat out it’ll crack 0-62mph in 7.3sec while you should get over 30mpg without too much difficulty.
