The Velar has its faults but is a stylish, refined and seriously appealing SUV. It’s best to stick to the cheaper engines and trims, though; once you start moving farther up the range the price pushes into the realms of better-resolved cars, such as the Audi Q8 and BMW X6.get the best price
S trim has a slightly higher resale value that in part offsets the extra initial outlay. It also adds the 14-way powered front seats, leather seat trim, an upgraded 10-speaker/ 380-watt stereo, in-built sat-nav, premium LED headlights, power-folding door mirrors, 19in alloy wheels and a powered tailgate, so we think it's the trim to buy.
Engine: 2.0 D180
This is our pick. It's the D180 2.0-litre diesel with 187bhp, and while its 0-62mph time of 8.9sec won't get you foaming at the mouth, it's solid enough in the mid-range to get you going easily in town or on the motorway. And as we'll discuss later on in this review, factor in the purchase price and running costs, and it makes a lot of sense if you're not a speed freak. It also has the best economy in the Velar range, and we managed over 35mpg through town with ease. Being a four-cylinder diesel it can be a little grumbly around at low speeds but quietens down on the motorway.
